If you didn’t finish Grade 12, completing your matric can open up more study and job opportunities.
The Adult Matric, also known as the Amended Senior Certificate (ASC), is designed for adults who want to earn their Grade 12 equivalent qualification.
This certificate is recognized as comparable to the National Senior Certificate (NSC), allows you to further your education at universities or TVET colleges, and qualifies you for many job positions in South Africa that require a matric certificate.
Where Can I Study Adult Matric?
You have several options when it comes to studying for your adult matric. Here’s where you can get started:
- Adult Learning Centres (ABET Centres)
- ABET centers, funded by the Department of Basic Education, offer free Adult Matric courses. These centers are available across South Africa, and you can find one near you on the ABET website.
- TVET Colleges
- Many TVET colleges offer Adult Matric programs. These programs often have online classes and support to make learning more flexible. Check with your local TVET college to see if they offer this option.
- Private Distance Learning Colleges
- Private colleges also offer adult matric programs. These colleges provide flexible learning schedules, including online classes, but usually charge tuition fees. Be sure to check their offerings and fees before enrolling.
Who Qualifies for Adult Matric?
To be eligible for the Senior Certificate (Adult Matric) exam, you need to meet these basic requirements:
- Age Requirement
- You must be 21 years or older.
- Educational Requirements
- You must have at least a Grade 9 pass or an equivalent qualification, such as a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC), showing proficiency in two official languages.
- Previous Matric Candidates
- If you started your Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate (NSC) but didn’t finish, you may be eligible to write the Senior Certificate exam. This applies to individuals whose School-Based Assessments (SBAs) for the NSC have expired or who wrote the NSC exams between 2008 and 2011.
- Youth Not in School
- Youth not enrolled in school may also qualify to sit for the Senior Certificate exam, provided they meet the specific criteria and follow the appropriate application process.
