Transnet Bursary Program 2025

Transnet’s bursary program is part of its pipeline development strategy, aimed at addressing skill shortages within the organization and contributing to the broader development of South Africa. 

The bursary is available for students pursuing undergraduate degrees or national diplomas in critical fields such as engineering, geospatial studies, supply chain management, property law, and more.

This initiative ensures that talented individuals have the financial and experiential support needed to excel in their academic and professional journeys.

Fields Covered by the Bursary

Transnet offers bursaries in two main categories:

Specialist Commercial Bursary (Degree or National Diploma)

  1. Geospatial
  2. Horticulture
  3. LLB (Property Law, Commercial Law)
  4. Property Studies / Real Estate
  5. Supply Chain and Logistics

Engineering Bursary (BEng or BSc)

  1. Electrical Engineering
  2. Electronics Engineering
  3. Industrial Engineering
  4. Mechanical Engineering

Bursary Benefits

Recipients of the Transnet bursary receive comprehensive financial support, including:

  1. Full coverage of tuition fees
  2. A textbook allowance
  3. Accommodation and meals
  4. Experiential training opportunities

Additionally, students may be required to undertake vacation work during the June/July or December/January holidays. 

Upon graduation, bursars may need to work for Transnet for a period equivalent to the duration of the bursary, depending on vacancy availability.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Transnet bursary, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a South African citizen
  2. Have completed Matric or be in the process of completing it
  3. Be studying or planning to study full-time in 2025 towards an undergraduate qualification in one of the listed fields
  4. Be enrolled or accepted at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa

For Specialist Commercial Bursary applicants:

  • Achieve a minimum of level 5 (60%) in English and relevant subjects for the course of study

For Engineering Bursary applicants:

  • Achieve a minimum of level 5 (60%) in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English

How to Apply for the Transnet Bursary

    Obtain the 2025 Transnet Bursary Application Form (available online).
  2. Prepare Supporting Documents
    Submit clear, certified copies of the following:
    • ID document
    • Matric certificate (or latest results if currently in Matric)
    • Full academic record, including the most recent results (if currently studying)
    • Proof of tertiary registration or acceptance (on the institution’s letterhead)
    • Shortened Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Application Deadline

The closing date for applications was 15 September 2024. 

Applicants are encouraged to prepare well in advance for future opportunities.

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will be notified by February 2025. 

Those who do not receive feedback by the end of February should consider their application unsuccessful.

The selection process includes:

  1. Interviews conducted by the Transnet Academy in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape
  2. A medical fitness assessment
  3. Submission of satisfactory academic results
