The South Deep Education Trust (SDET) invites students to apply for their bursary program for the 2025 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded to students from the South Deep Mine’s host and labor-sending areas for Diploma and Degree studies in ANY field (technical or non-technical).
The SDET Bursary Programme was established in 2015 to fund students within host and labour-sending areas, enabling them to pursue tertiary studies.
The South Deep Education Trust (SDET) is a non-profit organization that uplifts communities through education and skills development.
Focused on the South Deep Mine host communities in South Africa, the Trust provides financial aid, bursaries, and educational support to help students access higher education.
The South Deep Education Trust empowers individuals and promotes socio-economic progress by fostering academic excellence and career growth.
EXPENSES COVERED & BENEFITS
The bursary covers the following expenses:
- Full tuition fees
- Textbooks and study materials
- Equipment (for specialized qualifications such as Dentistry, Architecture, and Engineering – on a case-by-case basis)
- Accommodation (on-campus and off-campus)
- Laptop allowance
- Monthly stipend (for 10 months)
Additional benefits include:
- Personal development and mentorship support
- Extra tutoring (case-by-case basis, subject to Trustee approval)
- Community service: Bursary recipients are encouraged to complete one week of volunteer work annually to build skills and give back to their community.
- Academic responsibility: Students who fail any modules must repeat them at their own expense.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SDET BURSARY
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria before applying (failure to meet all requirements will result in disqualification):
- Must have a total household income of NOT more than R350 000 per annum
- Must reside in a South Deep host community (Westonaria, Bekkersdal, Simunye, Poortjie) or a South Deep Labour Sending Area (KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Eastern Cape)
- Must NOT be a dependent of a Gold Fields employee or a Trustee of the South Deep Education and Community Trusts
- Must be currently in Matric (2024) or have completed Matric.
- Must be studying or planning to study towards a Diploma or Degree in any field
- Must be studying or have been provisionally accepted to study at a public university or public TVET college in South Africa for 2025
- Must NOT have any other bursaries, scholarships, or financial aid
- Must have achieved:
- Minimum 75% average (excluding Life Orientation) in Matric if currently in Matric
- Minimum 65% average in the most recent academic year if currently studying and a first-time bursary applicant
- Must have passed the most recent academic year if a returning bursary applicant

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documents along with your online application (all documents are compulsory – missing documents will result in disqualification):
- Certified copy of ID document
- Certified copy of latest Matric results or Matric certificate
- Certified copy of the full academic record (if currently studying)
- Proof of tertiary acceptance/provisional acceptance
- Certified copy of proof of residence
- Proof of household income:
- Latest payslips if employed
- Affidavit if unemployed
- Proof of SASSA grant or pension (if applicable)
