About the SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary 2025
The SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary is designed to assist full-time students pursuing degrees or diplomas in Food Science and Technology at recognized South African tertiary institutions. The bursary aims to support academic achievement, promote employment equity, and nurture potential within the scientific community.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled full-time for a first degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology at a South African tertiary institution.
- Commit to completing the study program within the institution’s prescribed duration:
- Undergraduate degree (up to B.Sc. Honours): 4 years
- Higher Diploma or B. Degree: 3-4 years
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident with at least three years of residency in the country before the application.
- Maintain an active SAAFoST membership for a minimum of 12 months before applying.
Applicants must also provide a personal statement, a reference letter from a faculty member, and evidence of their academic standing.
How to Apply for the SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary
To apply, follow these steps:
- Download the application form in either Adobe PDF or MS Word format.
- Prepare the following documents:
- A recent head-and-shoulders passport-size photograph.
- A certified copy of your ID book or South African passport.
- Certified copies of your most recent academic results.
- A one-page personal statement detailing how your education in Food Science and Technology will positively impact your life and the scientific community.
- A reference letter from a faculty member familiar with your academic performance.
- Proof of registration at a recognized South African tertiary institution for 2024.
- Indicate “www.bursariesmzansi.co.za” in the field, asking how you heard about the bursary.
- Submit the completed application form and supporting documents to the SAAFoST Membership Development Officer via email.
This bursary comes with conditions. If you are considering applying for this bursary, read the conditions below carefully.
- The student will be required to sign a contract as an acceptance of and agreement to the conditions outlined below:
- Granting of bursaries is not automatic, and SAAFoST Foundation reserves the right not to award a bursary.
- Only students who apply within the specified date and, have fully completed the required application forms and whose registrations have been accepted by a university will be considered.
- The student must provide the SAAFoST Foundation with a six-monthly report and exam results outlining the highlights of the year’s study, including participation in SAAFoST activities.
- The bursary will, at the sole discretion of the SAAFoST Foundation, be converted into a loan repayable in equal instalments, as determined by the SAAFoST Foundation, at the prime rate of interest if, without formal permission of the SAAFoST Foundation:
- The student terminates or interrupts their studies without formal permission for the interruption of studies.
- The student does not complete their studies within the period stated above.
- The student fails any year or semester of study.
- Should the recipient not complete all of the stipulated courses in any bursary year or not complete any outstanding subjects as supplementary examinations before the commencement of the following academic year, then at the sole discretion of the SAAFoST Foundation, the bursary may be suspended for the following year with the proviso that should the recipient complete all of the courses in that subsequent year including any carried over courses from the previous year, then the SAAFoST Foundation will refund to the recipient, all suspended tuition fees and the bursary shall then continue as before. However, no repeated courses, subjects, or modules shall be paid for by the SAAFoST Foundation.
