Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), established in 1976, is a leading mining company situated near Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. It is a subsidiary of the global mining giant Rio Tinto Group, which owns 74% of RBM. Blue Horizon Investments holds a 24% share, while RBM employees own the remaining 2%.

Rio Tinto/ RBM Bursary Coverage
The bursary provides comprehensive financial support, covering:
- Tuition and registration fees (paid directly to the institution).
- Textbook allowance (up to R5,000 annually).
- Accommodation in university residences or hostels.
- Transport allowance (paid directly to the student).
Payments are made once per academic year, ensuring financial support throughout the year.
Eligibility Requirements for the Rio Tinto/ RBM Bursary
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to qualify:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Have completed Matric with good results.
- Be studying or intending to study full-time in one of the approved fields.
- Be registered or accepted at a recognized South African tertiary institution.
- Demonstrate financial need in line with NSFAS guidelines.
- Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
Steps to Apply

- Upload the following supporting documents:
- A certified copy of your ID document (not older than 3 months) is required.
- A certified copy of your matric certificate or statement of results (not older than 3 months) is required.
- Full tertiary academic record if currently studying (on institution letterhead).
- Proof of bank account.
- Proof of university acceptance (on institution letterhead).
- Certified copies of parents’ or guardians’ ID documents (if applicable).
- Parents’ or guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips, affidavit, pension, or grant proof).
- Motivational letter explaining why you deserve the bursary (1 page).
