The Master Builders and Allied Trades’ Association, Western Cape (MBAWC), established in 1891, is the oldest organization in South Africa. It is affiliated with Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) and focuses on maintaining the building industry’s reputation while attracting investment.
MBAWC’s membership comprises approximately 400 companies in the Western Cape, including builders, subcontractors, manufacturers, and suppliers of building products.

Eligibility Requirements.
To qualify for the MBAWC bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be South African citizens.
- Have completed Matric at a school within the Western Cape.
- Be enrolled or intend to enrol in 2025 for a Built Environment qualification at a recognized tertiary institution in the Western Cape.
- Not qualify for NSFAS funding (household income must exceed R350,000 but be less than R600,000 annually).
- Not qualify for any other bursary or financial support from a SETA or CETA.
Preference will be given to:
- Employees of MBAWC member companies or their family members.
- Applicants employed by a member company compliant with the BIBC benefit system for at least 24 uninterrupted months.
Fields of Study
The bursary supports students pursuing studies in the Built Environment sector. Eligible qualifications include:
University Degrees:
- Civil Engineering (BSc)
- Construction Studies (BSc)
- Construction Management (BSc Hons)
- Quantity Surveying (BSc Hons)
- Project Management (MSc)
- Other Built Environment-related fields, including motivated Master’s studies.
University of Technology Diplomas:
- Construction (Extended Diploma, Diploma, Advanced Diploma)
- Construction Health & Safety (Advanced Diploma)
- Quantity Surveying (Advanced Diploma)
- Master of Construction
- Other related qualifications in the Built Environment.
Bursary Value
The MBAWC bursary covers tuition fees only. Payments are made in two instalments:
- The first instalment is released after funding approval.
- The second instalment is contingent on a mid-year academic performance review.
The bursary is awarded for one academic year and is renewable based on satisfactory academic results. Applicants will be notified of their application status by 14 February 2025. Successful candidates must accept or decline the offer within three working days. If no feedback is received by 17 February 2025, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
