If you’re applying for a government job in South Africa, chances are you’ll need to complete a Z83 form. This document is a crucial part of the recruitment process and is used by government departments to shortlist candidates for interviews.
Many applicants make simple mistakes when filling in the Z83 form, which can result in their application being rejected. To help you avoid that, this guide will walk you through:
- What the Z83 form is
- Where to find government jobs
- Step-by-step instructions for completing each section
- Documents to attach
- What happens after you submit your application
What is the Z83 Form?
The Z83 form is the official application form for government jobs in South Africa. It allows government departments to collect basic personal information, job details, and qualifications from applicants.
Once submitted, the department will review your form, and if you’re shortlisted, you’ll be asked to provide certified copies of your qualifications and other supporting documents.
💡 Important: Always use the latest version of the Z83 form. The old version is no longer accepted. You can download the updated form from the DPSA website here.
Where to Find Government Jobs
Government jobs are advertised regularly across various departments and sectors. Almost all departments follow Employment Equity principles, which means they encourage applications from people with disabilities and candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The main place to find government vacancies is the Public Service Vacancy Circular. It’s published weekly (except in December) and includes job opportunities from national and provincial departments across South Africa.
You can access it here: Public Service Vacancy Circular.

- Include the full department name (e.g. Department of Employment and Labour).
- Write down the reference number from the job ad.
- State your earliest availability date if hired.
- Remember: One Z83 form = one position. You can’t apply for multiple jobs with the same form.

- Full name and surname
- ID or Passport number
- Date of birth
- Race, citizenship, nationality
- Disability status
- Criminal record history
- Previous employment in the public service (including retirements or discharges)
- Occupation and professional registration (if applicable)

- Include at least two reliable phone numbers of people who can pass messages to you if needed.
SECTION D – Language Proficiency
- List the languages you know.
- Rate your ability to speak, read, and write each one as Bad, Fair, or Good.
SECTION E – Qualifications
- Start with your highest qualification (e.g. Bachelor’s degree, National Diploma, Matric).
- Only include qualifications relevant to the job you’re applying for.
SECTION F – Work Experience
- Begin with your most recent job or relevant volunteer work.
- Include job titles, company names, dates, and responsibilities.
SECTION G – References
- List at least three professional referees (previous supervisors, colleagues, or managers).

Finally, sign and date the form, and initial each page.

Where to Submit Your Z83 Form
Follow the instructions in the job advertisement carefully:
- Submit your application before the closing date.
- Applications cannot be sent by email or fax.
- Forms must be posted or hand-delivered to the specified address.
Once the closing date passes, additional documents won’t be accepted.
What Happens After Submission?
After the application deadline:
- The department reviews all forms.
- A shortlist of candidates is created.
- Shortlisted applicants are contacted for an interview.
- A selection panel evaluates candidates and makes a recommendation.
- The recommendation is approved (or rejected) by the relevant authority.
If successful, you’ll need to pass Personnel Suitability Checks, which may include:
- Criminal record check
- Citizenship verification
- Qualification verification
- Employment history check
- Social media profile review
Important Notes
- Since 1 January 2021, only the new Z83 form is accepted.
- All personal details must match your ID or passport.
- Disclose any criminal record or pending case – failure to do so may result in disqualification.
- If applying for a contract longer than 12 months, you’ll be subject to a probation period.
