This initiative underscores Eskom’s commitment to nurturing young talent and building a pipeline of skilled professionals in the fields of engineering and technology.
Founded in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM), Eskom generates 95% of South Africa’s electricity and 45% of Africa’s total electricity usage.
Its diverse portfolio includes renowned power stations like Koeberg Nuclear Power Station and Kendal Power Station.
As part of its vision to drive sustainable energy solutions, Eskom supports academic excellence and technical expertise through this bursary programme.
Eskom Bursary Program
Eskom’s bursary program is tailored to support students pursuing careers in critical engineering and technical fields.
A total of 138 bursaries are available, divided between university and university of technology studies.
The programme covers the following disciplines:
University Studies (BEng/BSc):
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy and Light Current)
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Metallurgy Engineering
University of Technology Studies (Diploma):
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy and Light Current)
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Surveying Engineering
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Eskom bursary, applicants must meet specific requirements:
For University Studies:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Currently in Grade 12 in 2024.
- Achieved at least Level 4 in English, Level 5 in Pure Mathematics, and Level 5 in Physical Science in Grade 11.
- Intend to pursue a recognised university qualification in one of the listed fields in 2025.
- Hold conditional acceptance from a recognised South African university for the 2025 academic year.
- Not hold any other bursary funding or be registered at a tertiary institution.
For University of Technology Studies:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Currently in Grade 12 in 2024.
- Achieved at least Level 4 in English, Pure Mathematics, and Physical Science in Grade 11.
- Intend to pursue a recognised diploma qualification at a University of Technology in 2025.
- Hold conditional acceptance from a recognised South African University of Technology for the 2025 academic year.
- Not hold any other bursary funding or be registered at a tertiary institution.
Preference is given to candidates from under-represented groups and individuals with disabilities, aligning with Eskom’s employment equity goals.

Applicants must upload certified copies of the following documents:
- South African ID document.
- Grade 11 final results.
- Latest Matric results.
- Proof of conditional acceptance from a university or university of technology (on institutional letterhead).
Incomplete applications or missing documents may result in disqualification.
