The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) is offering a bursary opportunity to students in the Eastern Cape for the 2025 academic year.

East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) Bursary 2025

This bursary is aimed at students pursuing undergraduate studies in Mathematics, Science, Technology, and related fields, and it seeks to encourage students from the province to contribute to building scarce skills.

Fields Covered by the ELIDZ Bursary

The ELIDZ bursary supports students in the following fields of study:

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Technology
  • Related fields

ELIDZ Bursary Coverage

The ELIDZ bursary provides comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Prescribed books and other approved study materials
  • Accommodation and meals in university residences

The bursary does not cover any outstanding student debts or loans.

Additionally, ELIDZ offers:

  • Vacation Work: Bursary recipients are required to complete vacation work at the East London Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) during mid-year or end-of-year holidays.
  • Service Contract: Recipients must sign a Bursary Agreement and fulfill the service contract, which includes vacation work for the duration of the bursary.

The ELIDZ bursary is awarded for one academic year and is renewable annually based on the following conditions:

  • Students must maintain a minimum average of 60% in their final exams to renew the bursary.
  • Students will be required to participate in progress monitoring interviews throughout the bursary.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by phone no later than 5 February 2025. If you do not receive feedback by this date, please regard your application as unsuccessful.

Who Can Apply for the ELIDZ Bursary?

To qualify for the ELIDZ Bursary Programme, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen or a naturalized South African citizen.
  • Be between 16 and 25 years old.
  • Reside in the Eastern Cape province (in a township or village).
  • Have completed Matric.
  • I have achieved at least 60% in mathematics (NOT mathematical literacy) in matric.
  • I have achieved at least 60% in all other subjects in my matric.
  • I am studying or planning to study full-time toward an undergraduate qualification in one of the fields listed above in 2025.
  • Have applied and been accepted or provisionally accepted to study at a recognized South African university.
  • Intend to pursue postgraduate studies after completing your undergraduate degree.
  • Be from a disadvantaged background and in need of financial assistance (a financial needs assessment will be conducted).
  • Not be receiving any other bursary funding or under obligation to another bursary provider.
  • Students with disabilities, as well as those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds and rural areas, are encouraged to apply.

Steps to Apply

To apply for the ELIDZ Bursary, follow these steps:

Download and complete the ELIDZ Bursary Application Form 2025 (.pdf).

Submit the following certified documents along with your completed application form:

  • Certified copy of your ID document
  • Certified copy of your Matric certificate
  • Certified copy of your most recent academic record (if currently studying)
  • Proof of university acceptance or provisional acceptance
  • Proof of residence (e.g., utility bill, affidavit)
  • Proof of income from your parents or guardians (latest payslips, affidavit if unemployed, or SASSA letter if receiving state grant)
  • Motivational letter (1 page)
  • Merit or achievement certificates (if applicable)
  • Testimonial letter from a community member (1 page)
  • Testimonial letter from your school principal, lecturer, or university staff (1 page)

The closing date for applications is 27 January 2025 (at 16:00). Applications submitted after this date will not be considered, so please ensure that your application is submitted before the deadline.
