DENOSA invites South African nurses and midwives to apply for its 2025 Bursary Programme.

DENOSA Bursary Programme 2025

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA), South Africa’s most significant nurses’ trade union, offers bursaries to support nursing professionals and midwives in advancing their education.

Established in 1996, DENOSA has over 84,000 members and is affiliated with COSATU and the International Council of Nurses.

DENOSA provides bursaries for various nursing-related qualifications to foster professional development among its members while strengthening healthcare in South Africa.

Study Fields Covered by the DENOSA Bursary

The bursary will support the following nursing and midwifery courses:

  • Bridging courses and short courses
  • Community nursing science
  • Community health nursing, psychiatric nursing, and geriatric nursing
  • Postgraduate studies (at a University or Technikon)
  • Clinical Master’s degree programs

Bursary Coverage and Conditions

DENOSA’s bursary covers a portion of tertiary education expenses. Applicants are advised to secure additional funding for any shortfall.

Important Conditions:

  • Funding is awarded for one academic year at a time.
  • Recipients must reapply annually and maintain good academic performance to continue receiving support.
  • Progress reports must be submitted by 14 February each year.

Successful applicants will be February 14tarting in April 2025.

Eligibility Criteria For DENOSA Bursary

To qualify for the DENOSA Bursary Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a fully paid-up member of DENOSA for at least two years before applying.
  • Maintain DENOSA membership for the duration of the bursary.
  • Be a registered nurse and/or midwife.
  • Have completed approved post-basic work.
  • Be registered with a South African public tertiary institution for the 2025 academic year.

Additional Requirements Based on Course Type:

  • Post-basic undergraduate courses: Must have passed at least half of the program.
  • Post-basic diploma courses: At least half of the course must be completed over one year.
  • Short courses: Courses must be listed with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • Bridging courses: The first year of study must be completed.

  4. Attach Certified Copies of the Following Documents:
    • ID document
    • Proof of tertiary registration (arrange later if unavailable)
    • Academic transcripts or proof of completed courses (on institutional letterhead)
    • The latest payslip as proof of gross salary
    • Proof of registration fee payment for 2025
