RSR’s mission is to ensure the safety of passengers, communities, and stakeholders in the railway sector.

Headquartered in Bruma, Johannesburg, the RSR also has an office in Cape Town’s central business district.

The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) was established under the National Railway Safety Regulator Act, Act 16 of 2002, as a government agency in South Africa. Its primary responsibility is to oversee and regulate railway safety across the country and neighbouring states whose rail operations enter South Africa.

Fields of Study Covered by the RSR Bursary

The bursaries are aimed at supporting undergraduate students in the following fields of study:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Financial Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Information Technology
  • Internal Audit
  • Law
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Media and Communication
  • Risk Management
  • Supply Chain Management

Bursary Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. If you do not receive feedback regarding your application, kindly consider it unsuccessful.

Successful candidates will be required to sign a Bursary Agreement with the RSR.

Who can apply for the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR)?

Applicants must meet the following requirements to qualify:

  1. Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
  2. Age: Must be between 15 and 35 years old.
  3. Education:
    • Be in Matric in 2024 or have completed Matric.
    • Be studying or intending to study full-time toward an undergraduate qualification in one of the listed fields in 2025.
    • Be enrolled or accepted to study at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa (including TVET Colleges, Universities of Technology, or Private/Public Universities).
  4. Academic Performance:
    • Achieve a minimum overall average of 65% in Grade 11 final results or Matric mid-term results if entering 1st year in 2025.
    • Achieve a minimum overall average of 65% in the current year of study if already enrolled at a tertiary institution.
  5. Other Criteria: Must not be receiving any other financial sponsorship or bursary from another organization.

How to Apply for the RSR Bursary

Applications must be submitted online at the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) Bursary Application Form.

Required Documents

Applicants must upload clear copies of the following certified documents along with their completed application form:

  1. ID document.
  2. The latest matric results are if they are currently in matrics.
  3. Matric certificate, if completed Matric.
  4. Full academic record, including most recent results/transcripts, if currently studying.
  5. Proof of tertiary registration or admission.
  6. Quotation for the academic year’s tuition fees.
  7. A motivational letter explaining why you should be awarded the bursary.

Note: Applications submitted via email will NOT be accepted.

Closing Date for Applications

The closing date for the RSR Bursary is 17 January 2025.

Applications submitted after this date will not be considered. Ensure your application is completed and submitted before the deadline.
