About the Bursary Provider – Vulamathuba Empumelelo

Vulamathuba Empumelelo is the community development initiative of Communicare, focused on providing socio-economic support to Communicare tenants and the surrounding communities.

Through the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Fund (VEBF), the organization aims to empower students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue tertiary education in critical skill areas identified by the government.

Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Programme 2025: Key Details

The bursaries will be awarded to students residing within the Cape Metro Region (Cape Town) and pursuing undergraduate studies in fields declared scarce or critical by the South African government.

Bursary Coverage and Benefits

The Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary provides partial funding for the following expenses:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Textbooks and academic resources
  • Examination fees (if applicable)

The total value of the bursary will be determined by VEBF, with a maximum amount of R40,000 for tuition fees and R5,000 for prescribed material. In addition, students will receive quarterly mentorship.

Exclusions

The bursary does not cover electronic devices, stationery, outstanding study loans, or additional tuition fees beyond the maximum funding amount.

Bursary Renewal and Selection Process

Bursaries are awarded annually and may be renewed at the discretion of Vulamathuba Empumelelo. Successful candidates will be required to sign a bursary agreement. Shortlisted applicants will be notified by 3 February 2025. If you do not receive feedback within two months of the application deadline, please consider your application unsuccessful.

Eligibility Requirements for the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:

  • South African citizen or holder of a permanent residency permit/work visa in South Africa
  • Communicate with tenants from a previously marginalized community.
  • Reside within the Cape Metro Region
  • Aged between 19 and 50 years
  • Completed Matric
  • Enrolled or accepted for full-time or part-time undergraduate studies in a government-recognized scarce skills field
  • Enrolled at a public higher education institution (TVET College or University) in South Africa
  • Demonstrated financial need (determined by means test)
  • Gross household income of no more than R400,000 per year
  • Strong academic potential
  • Personal qualities such as enthusiasm, drive, positive attitude, communication skills, teamwork, volunteerism, problem-solving, creativity, and innovation
  • Preference is given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially those accepted at public institutions in Cape Town.
  • Preference is given to Communicate with tenants in good standing.

  3. Submit clear copies of the following documents with your completed application (failure to provide the required documents may result in disqualification):
    • Certified copy of your ID document or passport
    • Certified copy of Permanent Residency Permit or Work Visa (if applicable)
    • Certified copy of Matric certificate
    • Certified copy of recent academic results
    • Proof of application or registration for 2025 (on institution letterhead)
    • Certified copy of proof of residence
    • Certified copies of ID documents for all household members (spouse, parents, guardians)
    • Recent bank statements for all household members (last 3 months)
    • Proof of income for all household members (latest payslips, affidavit if unemployed, etc.)
    • Certified copies of relevant legal documents (court orders, maintenance orders, death certificates, etc.)
    • Motivational essay (minimum 250 words) explaining why you deserve the bursary
  4. Note: All documents must be certified within the last 6 months.

Closing Date for Applications

The closing date for the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary is 31 January 2025 (extension).
