SANBS invites South African students to apply for its 2025 bursary program.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is a non-profit organization responsible for collecting, testing, and distributing blood from voluntary donors to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply for the country’s healthcare system.
SANBS aims to collect 3,000 units of blood daily, playing an important role in saving lives and supporting medical treatments.
South African National Blood Service (SANBS) Bursary 2025
A total of 10 bursaries will be awarded to students pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences, with Immunohematology (Blood Transfusion) as one of the elective subjects.
Through this bursary, SANBS aims to invest in skilled professionals in blood transfusion while contributing to broader efforts to expand access to higher education.
SANBS BURSARY COVERAGE & SELECTION
The bursary provides comprehensive financial assistance, including:
- Tuition fees – Up to R40,000 per year
- Study materials – Up to R10,000 per year
- Partial accommodation coverage – Up to R1,500 per month (for 10 months)
- Monthly stipend – R3,500 per month (for 10 months)
- Work Integrated Learning – Hands-on experience at SANBS laboratories
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within one month after the closing date. If you do not receive feedback by then, consider your application unsuccessful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SANBS BURSARY
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be under 30 years old.
- Be studying towards a Bachelor of Health Sciences, with Immunohematology as an elective subject.
- Be in your 2nd or 3rd year of study in 2025
- Show a passion for your studies.
- Achieve a minimum overall average of 65% in your previous year.
- Not be receiving any other bursary or financial aid.
- Preference may be given to students in financial need (total household income must not exceed R600,000 per year)

- Submit the completed application form along with the following certified supporting documents:
- ID document (certified copy)
- Matric final results/certificate (certified copy)
- Most recent academic transcript
- Proof of acceptance at a registered and accredited tertiary institution
- Motivational letter (maximum 250 words)
- Proof of household income (latest 3 months’ payslips if employed, affidavit if unemployed, or evidence of SASSA grant/pension, if applicable)
